The Bermuda Triangle is a place of mysterious disappearances of ships and airplanes. It is roughly a triangular area in the ocean between Miami, Bermuda Island and Puerto Rico. Estimates range from 200 – 1000 incidents in the Triangle over the last 500 years. There are many explanations offered for the disappearances in the area.
Evil extraterrestrials, residue crystals from Atlantis, evil humans with anti-gravity devices or other weird technologies, and vile vortices from the fourth dimension are favorites among fantasy writers. Strange magnetic fields and oceanic flatulence (methane gas from the bottom of the ocean) are favorites among the technically-minded. Weather (thunderstorms, hurricanes, tsunamis, earthquakes, high waves, currents, etc.) bad luck, pirates, explosive cargoes, incompetent navigators, and other natural and human causes are favorites among skeptical investigators. http://www.world-mysteries.com/mpl_bermuda_triangle1.htm
Personally, I like the idea of an ancient underwater civilization living in the Triangle. To keep their existence secret, they engineer the sinking or disappearance of any ship or airplane traveling in the Triangle. Crew members and passengers that don’t drown are taken to live in the underwater civilization, never to leave again.
My story would be about a sailor that lived and was taken into the civilization. He’d explore this new, unknown world, but would fight to be set free to return to his own life. He’d fall in love with a woman from the underwater civilization and then have to choose whether to continue his fight to leave or stay with her.
How would you use the Bermuda Triangle in a story?
