Spots the Space Marine: Defense of the Fiddler by M.C.A. Hogarth
I LOVED this story. It’s written like a comic book without the pictures – short descriptive paragraphs to set the scene or describe action and the rest is dialogue. Once you get accustomed to the format, it reads very easily. I could picture each scene in my head and couldn’t stop reading.
The story follows Magda or Spots as her team calls her, a 30-something mom who’s recalled to active duty in the space marines. While there’s plenty of action, the main focus is on the characters and their relationships with each other. A truly fabulous read. I highly recommend it.

Pollyanna meets Starship Troopers in this fast, screenplay-like novel about a 30-something Marine private called out of retirement to join the war against the crabs. But shattered morale is the least of her company’s problems, and their survival may hinge on an unlikely friendship forged between an alien weapons designer and a mother-turned-warrior….
